What Is the Gospel? A Clear, Biblical Answer
The word 'gospel' means 'good news.' But the good news of what — and why does it matter so much? The gospel is the very heart of the Christian faith, and getting it clear is worth more than almost anything else you could study.
The gospel is news, not advice
Most religion is advice: here is what you must do to climb up to God. The gospel is news: here is what God has already done to reach down to you. It is an announcement before it is ever an assignment.
That difference is everything. You do not earn good news — you receive it.
It begins with God
The story starts not with us but with God — holy, eternal, the Creator of all things, worthy of all worship. We are made by Him and for Him, and our lives make sense only in relation to Him.
You cannot understand the good news until you reckon with the God it is about.
It reckons honestly with sin
We have not loved God or our neighbor as we should. Scripture calls this sin, and it is not a small thing: it separates us from God and justly earns death and judgment.
This is the hard truth that makes the good news good. A cure means little to someone who does not know they are sick.
It centers on Jesus Christ
Into our need came Jesus — fully God and fully man. He lived the sinless life we could not live, died on the cross bearing the penalty our sin deserved, and rose bodily from the grave, defeating death.
The cross and the empty tomb are the center of the gospel. Remove them and there is no good news left.
It calls for a response
The gospel asks something of us: repent and believe. Turn from sin, and trust in Christ alone to save you. Salvation is by grace, through faith — not a wage you earn but a gift you receive.
It is not for the good who have it together. It is for the guilty who will trust the Savior.
That is the gospel: God, our sin, Christ crucified and risen, and the call to repent and believe. It is the best news in the world — and it is worth examining for yourself until you are sure of it.
